By 1998, Stonebridge Park had become a hotbed of violent crime. Operation Trident investigated 48 shootings over two years in Brent, many of them linked back to Stonebridge Park.
Stonebridge Park was established in 1998 at 860 Cross Bridge Rd in Edmonton. This community offers four pools (two zero-entry), two clubhouses with workout facilities, sports and recreational activities, and more than any other residential community in Edmonton. Stonebridge Park estate was initially designed for middle-class residents. Homes on Barry Road were home to tradespeople, while those on Brett Road were considered slums. Unfortunately, drainage issues plagued this estate until it eventually flooded in 1928, prompting government authorities to build fewer houses than planned.
In the 1960s, the council attempted to modernize the area by building high-rise blocks. Their purpose was to house around 1,700 predominantly black families – however, this estate quickly became notorious for broken lifts and low levels of maintenance; drugs also plagued its community.
Stonebridge Park has been used as the setting for numerous films over time, beginning with independent filmmaker Patrick Keiller’s groundbreaking short narrative film Stonebridge Park (1981), featuring historical footage as its background and nominated for an Academy Award nomination.
