Pana Community Hospital and Tanner Park

Pana Community Hospital’s Excel Sports Enhancement Program is ideal for athletes seeking to enhance their level of function, increase physical fitness, and develop skills specific to their sport. Rehabilitated athletes also benefit significantly from this program.

The foundation transformed a 10-acre tract, once known as Tanner Drive-In, into soccer fields and ball diamonds for community league teams and Pana High School sports. Over time, a pavilion, concession stand, and permanent bathrooms were added.

Tanner Park

Tanner Park is an idyllic green space at the core of Tanner Health System’s campus in Portland. It offers many social benefits for its community members, including encouraging active lifestyles, supporting arts and culture events, and providing a space to enjoy nature. Furthermore, its design helps reduce stormwater runoff while improving water quality – while its wetland design helps mitigate flooding during extreme precipitation events.

The 138-acre park offers camping, hiking, fishing, paddling, and putt-putt golf, along with motel units, group lodges, and pavilions. Campsites feature pull-through sites equipped with water, electricity, and cable TV; its group lodge can sleep 40 overnight guests and boasts full kitchen amenities as well as fireplace, deck, and lake view views; its paved pathways offer accessible routes for those with disabilities.

Long Island’s Great South Bay hosts this multi-use park owned and managed by the Town of Babylon, offering recreational activities from bay beach access and interactive spray park to baseball fields, softball pitches, soccer, lacrosse, lacrosse, football fields, as well as tennis courts and senior center facilities. Furthermore, Copiague Youth League plays at this facility from ages 4-18.

Not only does the park provide recreational amenities, but it also serves as a living laboratory for sustainable practices. Its design draws inspiration from both its former ecology and historical references – including an art installation made of railroad tracks and pathways paved with cobble blocks – as well as the park’s meadow-like grasses that recall myrtle trees that once served tanneries nearby.

The park’s wetlands and stormwater management systems help reduce flood risks, improve water quality, and increase biodiversity – contributing to its sustainability and earning it LEED Gold certification from USGBC. Atelier Dreiseitl’s award-winning landscape firm used collaborative design processes to engage local communities while showing the value of sustainable practices and demonstrating them throughout its design of sustainable features for this park.
