While manga focuses on characters, its themes tend to be more serious. Manhwa also tackles similar topics as manga, such as bullying and social pressure to be beautiful; plus, many cultural and historical events that have shaped Japan are explored within these narratives.

BL is known for encompassing many themes, from romantic comedies to more intricate relationships from other manga genres. Fans include both gay men and heterosexual women and those looking for information about relationships between two males.
